That NC State-Clemson game on Sunday was very nerve rattling. At the end of the game I felt like I had played in it myself. Double OT win on the road! Go Pack!! Clemson should have fouled after missing two free throws and being up 3 pts. with 9 secs. left on the clock. If we made both of them, they would still be up by one and have possession of the ball. Oh well, it is easy to be a Monday (or Tuesday) morning QB.

Remembering another time

I have a slightly unusual post today. I am going through (and typing) my great grandfather's journal that he kept while serving as a soldier for the Confederacy. His name was John Phillip Louderback; he was my mother's father's father. He was later taken prisoner at Fishers Hill, VA, and it was there that he carved a beautiful watch chain from chicken bone and the buttons on his vest. I have that watch chain and the watch that goes with it today. I am posting an entry in his journal here:

1863 Thursday Jan 29
This morning is a gloomy time among the soldiers, as the snow is about ten inches deep, and we cannot have meat or bread owing to the deep snow, and the distance to hauling it is about 12 miles, and a very bad road. No items of news as I know of at this time. All is quiet.

This gives the reader a smidgeon of an idea of what life was like on that day back in 1863 for these soldiers. We think of how tough it is to live our lives here in America sometimes, and going through this journal allows me a different perspective. It also helps me to appreciate any of our soldiers away from home, especially those who are at war.

Ben and Sarah

I had this pic of Ben and Sarah ever since Dec. 26, and I don't know why I haven't posted it before, but here it is now. Here they are headed back to DC after a short visit in Kernersville. We had a good time seeing them, although as I said it was a short visit. I just happened to think of it after sending a copy to Mr. Autorotation (see Kevin Riley's blog.) BTW, that is a very interesting blog so you will want to check it out. We wish these newlyweds success and much happiness. Looking forward to seeing you both up in DC sometime soon.

Hall-Woodward Bulb Planting

Oaklawn Baptist Church has a partnership with Hall-Woodward Elementary (no relation) and some of us did a bit of bulb planting and mulch moving on Saturday. I have included pics with Mrs. McCoy the Principal, and Mr. Hampton the Asst. Principal. Before I fail to mention it, it was as windy as a scene from the Wizard of Oz. You will notice that most everyone has a good wind-breaker on, and most of us have hoods. We put a bunch of bulbs in the ground, and I will have to get pics in the spring to show you the real beauty of our efforts. Go Jets.

Heaven

My son, David, gave me this book, Heaven by Randy Alcorn, for Christmas. I have just begun to read it, (preface and chapter 1.) I believe I am going to enjoy reading it, which is saying quite a lot for someone like me, who is not an avid reader. Most of us don't think that much about where we will spend eternity, even Christians. Randy talks about some misconceptions about what heaven will be like. Of course, I don't think that I have any of those--but I have only started the book. I certainly don't want to try to tell everything that Randy has to say, but I would recommend this book to anyone, and I will keep you guys posted. Ben mentioned that this world is not our home in his post yesterday (Ben and Sarah.) We forget that sometimes, and reading a book on Heaven just might help us to keep in mind where our true home is.

Attempt to master self-made photo

I attempted to make a shot of myself, just as Ben has done on several occasions (See Ben and Sarah link) but the ones I took made Goofy here look really cool. Hence, I opted for this shot of the character who is such a delight but not all that bright. I will continue to work at it. Well, we're all back at work this week, and things are going relatively well here in the textile industry. I have more to do at work since the one employee that worked for me was laid off. I am thankful that I still have a job, but I say a prayer for those who are no longer with us, and are looking for employment.
