Secondhand Lions

Now this is a movie that I would have never picked up if someone hadn't recommended it to me. So now I am recommending to you. This is such a funny flick, and if you like to laugh, get ready for a side-splitting evening. Here is the rundown from Yahoo! Movies (which is where I got these shots:)
For 14-year old Walter, his great uncles’ farm in rural Texas is the last place on earth he wants to spend the summer. Minigolf

Here is a little diversionary pastime for some of you who need something to pass all those extra hours in your day. You know those days where you just have more time than you know what to do; this game will help take away the temptations to just blog, do email or surf the internet. Try it and let me know how you like it, and if you want to stick your chest out, show me your golf scores. So now I have the same score as yesterday, but I did it with all deuces and aces! I know, the score is still the same. I need to try to improve on that. Give me time. So, as I said in my last post (under Secondhand Lions) and thanks to the challenge of Dan the Man, I shot a 27--twice. But I will wait until after the weekend to post the scorecards. Speaking of weekends y'all have a safe and fun one.

Minigolf

Pluto demoted

I certainly am shocked to find out that Pluto is no longer a planet. After learning that it was back when I was in school, (and I know that was several years ago, but I don't want any wise cracks from the peanut gallery) it is hard to come to the realization that it is now classified as a "dwarf planet." I think those scientists are being discriminatory. Let's give them about 50 years or so, and maybe they will say it has been reclassified as legit.

The Brick House

Well, I thought I'd show one more shot of this house up the street before its completion. It has come a long way in a short time. It looks like it will serve the owner well. All these years we thought no one would ever be able to build here, because the land wouldn't perk. Never say never.

Plant Life

Have you noticed that these days how pictures are free? Whether you take them with your own digital camera, or if you get them off of someone's website, at least in most cases it really doesn't cost you anything. Sure it cost something to recharge your batteries, and for a while it takes up disk space on your camera or on your computer. But you can take pics, upload them wherever you want, show them to your friends and never have to print them (unless you want to.) I suppose I should have given credit of the site that allowed me to "borrow" that one with all the sunflowers. (I took the one with the monkey grass and its blossoms.) Just the other day, not too far from our house, I noticed what I thought was a fairly large garden of sunflowers. I thought that it would be a good idea to capture the beauty of those flowers with my Sony. But then I saw this shot with so many more flowers and I thought, "That is a prettier pic than I would have made myself. I will do a little "cut and paste" and everyone will appreciate its beauty so much more than the shot I could have made." So I suppose the monkey grass looks pretty sad next to the sunflowers. I probably should have made two separate posts from these pics. I will do better next time.

NYC Pools

Here are a couple of pics of pools in the New York city area, courtesy of the NY Times (today's online edition.) I couldn't imagine swimming in anything as huge as these two. The upper pic is of the Red Hook Pool in Brooklyn in 1940. The second one is the of the Astoria Pool in Queens in 1936, with Hell Gate in background. I was thinking that it must have been nice to have a place to cool off like these back in that day, but the biggest pool I have ever been swimming in, was Duke Park Pool in Durham, NC. I don't imagine anyone tried to do any laps in crowds like these.

We're back from the beach!

We had a great time at Holden Beach last week. As you can see from the pics, that the little ones did too. And how do you measure a successful week at the beach? We can start with no shark bites, no jellyfish stings, and only a few cases of too much sun.

A Brick House

Yes, this is a brick house they are building just up the street, and although the progress seems slow, I think they will be finished before you know it. It looks like it will be very nice. Maybe you will just have to endure one more pic on this subject.
